Bastard – Trondheim international performing arts festival is Teaterhuset Avant Garden’s annual festival. This year it takes place from Tuesday 11. September through to Sunday 16. September. We are now looking for the right volunteers to make the festival happen!
Our volunteers are vital. This year we are looking for a few individuals to work in a small team together with staff, technicians and artists to provide everyone who visits the festival with a great experience.

This is the task for those who feel that they have some extra time and commitment. Our vision is to have a host for each artist/company, following them from A to Z. The tasks will vary from company to company. The Artist Host is the company’s contact person, and will therefore work closely with the volunteer coordinator and producer throughout the festival. We need people who are dedicated, service-minded and solution-oriented. Good spoken English is essential for this task, as many of our artists come from countries other than Norway. Having other language skills will be an advantage, but not a requirement. If you have worked with something similar before, please let us know.
For each performance, we need a person who has the responsibility to ensure that the audience is safe and happy while they are visiting us. The audience host will be given a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to; checking tickets, greeting the audience, being a fire warden during performance, keeping in touch with the company/technician/artist host before and after performances, guarding the wardrobe, restocking toilet facilities, and clearing the theatre after a performance. This requires that you are outgoing, service-minded, self-motivated and creative, and that you speak Norwegian/Scandinavian and/or English well.
The job as a driver mainly consists of picking up and bringing artists to and from Værnes airport, the train station and the hotel, and to some extent also help transporting people and equipment between the various venues. Drivers are needed before, during and after the festival. The assignment requires that you have a driver’s license class B, as well as good spoken English.
Working with rigging mainly means working with our wonderful technicians, and helping them with what they need. You must be prepared for some heavy lifting, as well as open to the possibility of working late in the evening or early in the morning – after the last and before the first performance of the day. It is an advantage if you have done something similar before, but it is not a requirement. Please let us know if you have any previous experience.
One of the festival’s performances need its own especially trained assistants to assist and help the artist during the performance. We are looking for three people who can be available for training and performances during the afternoon and evening of the 11. and 12. September. Those who are to take on this assignment must be reliable, safe, friendly and able to follow the directions given by the artist/company.
With help from our PR group we will make sure that Bastardfestivalen will be seen all over town! As part of the PR group you will be located at stands around the city, such as Nordre gt, Solsiden etc., where we hand out flyers, programmes, talk with people about the festival and helping the Marketing Team with content to social media such as Instagram and Facebook. This post requires you to be outgoing, smiling and overall very positive, as you become the public face of the festival. We also need someone who can hang up posters and deliver festival programmes to cafes and other relevant locations around the city. The PR group requires staffing both before the festival starts and while it is in progress.
This is a task for those who like preparing food! We need people who love to cook and who would like to prepare food for technicians, staff, and to some extent, the other volunteers and artists. As food should be delivered to various venues, it can be an advantage to have a driver’s license, but it is not a requirement.
The festival begins on Tuesday 11. September, but there is a lot that need to happen before that. Important preparation tasks we need help with are to source props needed for the various performances. It can be anything from shopping at Ikea, to collecting things we are hiring/borrowing, to searching on FINN.no or other creative solutions. Other work may include preparing venues/spaces, lighter rigging etc.
