Teaterhuset Avant Garden

Teaterhuset Avant Garden, or simply Avant Garden, is an arena for presenting and co-producing independent performing arts. It was founded in 1984, and Avant Garden’s main goals are to promote professional, cross-genre, interdisciplinary performing arts by presenting and co-producing international, national and local productions, and by encouraging original production at a local level; and by assisting, supporting and presenting performing arts productions targeted towards a variety of target groups from toddlers to elderly people.

Avant Garden was established in its current location in 1993 in collaboration with the municipalities of Trondheim and the regional authorities in Sør-Trøndelag County. Today it is funded by the above mentioned authorities and by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Avant Garden, being Central Norway’s only programming theatre and venue for guest productions, is one of Norway’s most important arenas for the presentation and conveying of touring project-based performing arts for children and adults alike.

On a national level, Avant Garden is co-operating with, among others, Black Box Theatre in Oslo and BIT Teatergarasjen in Bergen. These three theatres are co-operating in exchanging theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performing arts productions between Norway’s three largest cities.

Avant Garden is a member of Norsk Teater- og Orkesterforening (NTO) and IETM (International network for contemporary performing arts).
