Teaterhuset Avant Garden, or simply Avant Garden, is an arena for presenting and co-producing independent performing arts. Being Central Norway’s only programming theatre and venue for guest productions, the theatre is one of the country’s most important arenas for presenting and conveying touring project-based performing arts.
Avant Garden was founded in 1984. It was established in its current location in 1993, with help from the municipalities of Trondheim and the regional authorities in Sør-Trøndelag County. Today it is funded by the above mentioned authorities and by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture.
Avant Garden’s main goals are to promote professional, cross-genre, interdisciplinary performing arts: By presenting and co-producing international, national and local productions, and by encouraging original production at a local level, as well as assisting, supporting and presenting performing arts productions targeted towards a variety of target groups from toddlers to elderly people.
On a national level, Avant Garden is co-operating with, among others, Black Box Theatre in Oslo and BIT Teatergarasjen in Bergen. These three theatres are co-operating in exchanging theatre, dance and interdisciplinary performing arts productions between Norway’s three largest cities. Avant Garden is a member of Norsk Teater- og Orkesterforening (NTO) and IETM (International network for contemporary performing arts).
September is festival time at Teaterhuset Avant Garden! Each fall, The Bastard Festival presents contemporary performing art projects from the Norwegian and international independent art scene.
In more than one way, contemporary performing arts can be seen as the cross-bred offspring – a bastard, if you will – of the established theatrical traditions of centuries passed. It exists independently of itself, devoid of any formal requirements to its unpredictable nature. Through this it revitalizes theatre by crossing genres and bringing in new expressions.
Bastard 2017 will be arranged 20-24 September
The stage at Avant Garden is a blackbox seating 66 spectators. The stage is 10 meters deep and 6,4 meters wide. Some performances are presented at other venues, like Verkstedhallen and Trøndelag Teater’s Studio Stage.
The theatre has a small rehearsal room, located on the second floor. This space is available for companies working on projects that are co-produced by the theatre.
The main stage and the rehearsal room can be rented in vacant periods (the rehearsal room, only for rehearsals, not shows). Please note that the rehearsal room is situated in an office environment and not suitable for large groups or “noisy” work during office hours. It cannot be used during performances on the main stage.
